Historic Sites in County Monaghan

Three of the entries below sit within a few minutes’ walk of each other in Clones. A truncated round tower among the oldest in Ireland stands near a high cross assembled from the fragments of at least two 10th-century crosses and the ruins of the ‘Wee Abbey’; the Cassandra Hand Centre, in the 1859 school paid for by the lace industry she started during the Famine, and St Tiernach’s Church of Ireland are both a short walk from them. The restored Ulster Canal gives flat towpath walking from the same town.

Monaghan town holds two more. St Macartan’s Cathedral crowns the Hill of the Monks above the town, the only cathedral in the county, with a hammerbeam roof and a 2,000-pipe organ inside. Down in Church Square, the 1827–30 courthouse still carries bullet marks from the Civil War on its Doric columns, and the memorial to the seven people killed in the 1974 bombing stands outside it.

The rest need a drive. Carrickmacross has the 1841 workhouse, now a community centre with weekday guided tours, and the roofless Magheross Church in a working graveyard on the town’s edge. Clontibret and the cairn on Mullyash Mountain are linked by the Monaghan Way, a half-day walk between them. Hollywood Lake, free to enter since 1969, is the summer stop, with swimming and a MacMahon crannog out in the water.

Where to start

  1. St Macartan's Cathedral – Monaghan's spire Monaghan

The only cathedral in the county and a landmark of the Irish Gothic Revival, with rose windows, a hammerbeam roof and a 2,000-pipe organ.

  2. Clones Town and Round Tower Clones

Early medieval monastic remains inside a working border town, including one of Ireland's oldest round towers, a composite high cross and canal towpath walking.

  3. Carrickmacross Workhouse – famine history Carrickmacross

Built in 1841 for 500 people and holding nearly 2,000 by 1851, it gives the county's most direct account of the Famine years.

  4. Clontibret – 1595 battle & Monaghan Way Clontibret

A village of 172 people on the Monaghan Way, known for Hugh O'Neill's 1595 victory in the opening clash of the Nine Years' War.

St Macartan's Cathedral – Monaghan's spire

Monaghan, monaghan

St Macartan’s Cathedral crowns the Hill of the Monks above Monaghan, the only cathedral in the county and one of the great works of the Irish Gothic Revival. J.J. McCarthy designed it and William Hague finished the spire; inside are a 2,000-pipe organ, a hammerbeam roof and rose windows, alongside the marks of a drastic 1980s reordering.

Carrickmacross Workhouse – famine history

Carrickmacross, monaghan

Carrickmacross Workhouse opened in 1841 to house 500 of the local poor; by 1851 nearly 2,000 men, women and children were crammed inside, and its orphan girls were shipped to Australia and Canada. The building now works as a community centre, and hour-long guided tours run twice a day on weekdays.

Clontibret – 1595 battle & Monaghan Way

Clontibret, monaghan

Clontibret is a village of 172 people near the Monaghan border, best known for the 1595 battle where Hugh O'Neill's forces beat an English army in the opening clash of the Nine Years' War. It sits on the Monaghan Way walking trail, and there's gold under the surrounding fields – over a million ounces, by one estimate, still in the ground.

Monaghan Courthouse – bullet-scarred columns

Church Square, monaghan

A neoclassical courthouse built in 1827–30 to a design by Joseph Welland, its Doric columns still carry bullet marks from the Civil War. A 1981 fire gutted the interior; the 2011 restoration in fresh Carnmore sandstone won an architecture award. Outside stands the memorial to the seven people killed in the 1974 Monaghan bombing.

Questions people ask

Which of these can I do without a car?
Clones works best on foot. The round tower, high cross, Wee Abbey ruins, St Tiernach's Church and the Cassandra Hand Centre are all within a few minutes' walk of the town centre, and the Ulster Canal towpath starts from the same town.
Where do I go to understand the Famine in Monaghan?
Two places, and they pair well. Carrickmacross Workhouse covers the institution itself, including the orphan girls shipped to Australia and Canada. The Cassandra Hand Centre in Clones covers the alternative, a home lace industry started in 1847 to keep families out of the workhouse.
Are any of these walks rather than short stops?
Mullyash Mountain is the one. The kerbed cairn on the 317 m summit dates from around 4000 BC, and the Monaghan Way climbs right over it, giving a straightforward half-day hill walk starting from Clontibret. Everything else on the list is a short visit.
Is there anything here that suits a warm day or younger children?
Hollywood Lake. It has been free to enter since a local committee bought it in 1969, and there is swimming, non-motorised boating, fishing and a fenced playground, plus a MacMahon clan crannog out in the middle. Best between June and September.
Can I combine Carrickmacross Workhouse with anything nearby?
Magheross Church sits on the edge of the same town, on its heritage trail. It is a roofless medieval tower with gate piers, burned in the 1590s, ruined again in 1641 and rebuilt in 1682, standing in a graveyard still in use.
