Most of this list falls into two groups. In the south-west, Sliabh Beagh spreads over the point where Tyrone meets Monaghan and Fermanagh, a low plateau of blanket bog, peat hills and quiet loughs, with short waymarked loops or the long and demanding Sliabh Beagh Way. Just north of it, the Clogher Valley carries the 30-mile Carleton Trail out of Clogher, past Knockmany passage grave and William Carleton’s childhood cottage; most people take the shorter 13.8km Black Route on quiet roads, and Clogher village adds an 8km bog loop of its own.
The rest is Sperrin ground. Bessy Bell is a 420m hill above Newtownstewart, climbed on a 7-mile return route from the Mellon Country Inn, with two wind farms on the upper slopes. Davagh Forest holds colour-coded mountain-bike trails and the OM Dark Sky Park, which makes it a place to stay late rather than leave at dusk. Drum Manor, west of Cookstown, is gentler: woodland trails, an arboretum and a walled butterfly garden around a big house left deliberately to ruin. Pomeroy Forest is the one for small children.
Drumragh’s riverside lanes sit at the edge of Omagh, and the Clogher walks start in the village itself; the forest parks and Bessy Bell all need a car. The Ulster Way is included here as a whole, and only about 400 of its 625 miles are genuine off-road walking, so it is one to pick sections from. Bog and forest ground stays wet well after rain.

newtownstewart, tyrone
Bessy Bell is a 420m hill in the Sperrins above Newtownstewart, climbed on a roughly 7-mile return walk from the Mellon Country Inn. The waymarked route passes a holy well and Donald Gorm's cairn, with views to the Derg Valley, the Sperrins and Donegal on a clear day. Two wind farms on the upper slopes are the catch.
Clogher, tyrone
A 30-mile way-marked circuit out of Clogher, linking Knockmany passage grave, the 1838 Forth Chapel and the childhood cottage of novelist William Carleton. Most people ride the shorter 13.8km Black Route on quiet roads, though one off-road section up Vinegar Hill has slipped in a landslide. Free to walk or cycle, year-round.

Clogher is a quiet County Tyrone village that has been a bishop's seat since the fifth century. Its landmarks are the 1744 St Macartan's Cathedral, a heritage complex with a restored forge and labourer's cottage, and the 8km Clogher Bog Loop Walk through rare lowland blanket bog.
Davagh Road, tyrone
A colour-coded mountain-bike network, from a family green loop to a 16km red trail with rock-slab drops, threads through upland forest in the Sperrins. After dark, the OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory opens one of the least light-polluted skies in Ireland.
Drum Road, tyrone
Drum Manor Forest Park, west of Cookstown, took an unusual decision with its big house: rather than restore it, the Forest Service let it fall into ruin and planted a Japanese garden into the shell. Around it sit an arboretum of Blue Atlas cedars and yew, a walled butterfly garden, a wildfowl lake and waymarked woodland trails.
Three County Hollow, monaghan
Straddling the border where Monaghan, Fermanagh and Tyrone meet, Sliabh Beagh is a low, windswept plateau of blanket bog, peat hills and quiet loughs. Walkers can pick from short waymarked loops or take on the demanding Sliabh Beagh Way, passing ancient cairns, a holy well and replanted native woodland.
