Kilkenny, located in the south-east of Ireland, is a vibrant and historic city known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful architecture, and lively atmosphere. From the medieval Kilkenny Castle to the charming cobblestone streets of the city center, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Kilkenny.
Probably the most well known site in Kilkenny is the Kilkenny Castle, a majestic medieval castle that sits on the banks of the River Nore. The castle, which dates back to the 12th century, has been the home of some of Ireland’s most powerful families, and it’s now open to the public for tours. Visitors can explore the castle’s impressive state rooms, admire the beautiful gardens, and learn about its rich history.
Not to miss, is the St. Canice’s Cathedral, an impressive 13th-century cathedral that is located on the city’s highest point. The cathedral is known for its beautiful architecture, including a round tower, and its impressive collection of stained glass windows. Visitors can also climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city.
The Castle and Cathedral are by far the only historical sites in Kilkenny. At the top of our list there is also the Black Abbey, a 13th-century Dominican friary, and the Rothe House, a 16th-century merchant’s house. Visitors can also take a stroll along the Medieval Mile, a walking trail that takes in some of the city’s most historic sites.
