Ever wondered what it feels like to be a giant? At the West Cork Model Railway Village in Clonakilty, you can! Step back into the 1940s and wander through charming, miniature versions of West Cork towns – Clonakilty, Kinsale, Bandon, and Dunmanway – all connected by the historic West Cork Railway line, complete with little trains chugging along the tracks. Amazingly, it's the only model village of its kind in Ireland.
These aren't mass-produced models. Each tiny building (built at a 1:24 scale) is a handcrafted replica of its 1940s counterpart, meticulously researched and built on-site using photos and old plans. Look closely, and you'll spot delightful little scenes: bustling market days, a couple getting married outside a church, kids playing in a schoolyard – tiny snapshots of life back then.
It's not just for looking, though! You can get hands-on steering remote control boats on the miniature harbour, try your hand at the mini diggers, and younger visitors will love the colourful outdoor play area. When you need a pit stop, the Village Cafe is right there for tea, coffee, and snacks.
This unique attraction was dreamt up by a local heritage group in the 80s and officially opened back in 1994 by President Mary Robinson. It celebrated 30 years of delighting visitors in 2024! Because the models are handmade and live outdoors, don't be surprised if you spot an empty space – a building might just be in the workshop getting a little TLC before returning to its spot. It's a truly charming way to spend a few hours, exploring the region's past in miniature.
