Lakes, Rivers & Waterfalls in County Cork

These sixteen do not sit together on the map. Three are within easy reach of Cork city: Inniscarra Lake, the 530-hectare ESB reservoir formed when the Lee was dammed in the 1950s, 15 km west; the Glashaboy, which powered Glanmire’s woollen mills and now carries a flat waymarked walk down to the tidal reach; and Lough Mahon, the sea-lough fringing the southern suburbs, with paved greenway paths running to Blackrock Castle.

West Cork and the peninsulas hold the rest of the lakes, and each needs a drive. Lough Hyne became Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve because the Atlantic pushes in twice a day through The Rapids, leaving it warmer and saltier than the sea outside; the Knockomagh Hill path above it gives the view. Lough Allua is a slow, wide reach of the young Lee below Inchigeelagh, with a crannóg marked by a clump of trees on the water. Out on Beara, the Mare’s Tail is viewed from a lay-by on the R572, and it only performs after a few days of rain.

The rivers run mostly through north and east Cork. The Munster Blackwater covers 169 km to Youghal Harbour and has long been rated among the best salmon rivers in the country, its estuary a Ramsar site for godwits and other waders. The Awbeg joins it near Castletownroche after 51 km through Buttevant and Doneraile. The Bandon is the outlier, running south from the Shehy Mountains through its walled town to Kinsale Harbour.

Lough Hyne – Ireland’s first marine reserve

West Cork, cork

Twice a day the Atlantic forces its way in through a narrow channel called The Rapids, leaving Lough Hyne warmer and saltier than the sea outside it. That quirk made it Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve and a marine-biology site studied since the 1880s. Come for the Knockomagh Hill view, a bioluminescent night paddle, or just the picnic tables by the water.

Lough Mahon – Cork Harbour's sea-lough

Cork Harbour, cork

A tidal sea-lough fringing Cork's southern suburbs, Lough Mahon draws thousands of migratory waders to its mudflats each spring and autumn. Flat, paved greenway paths run the shoreline, linking to Blackrock Castle and the Marina Market. Its channel was once guarded by a pioneering iron lighthouse on wooden piles, demolished by a ship in 1930.

Munster Blackwater – salmon river and estuary

Kerry, kerry

The Blackwater runs 169 km from the Mullaghareirk Mountains to Youghal Harbour, through Cork and Waterford, and it has long been rated among Ireland's finest salmon rivers. The estuary is a Ramsar site and Special Protection Area for its godwits and other waders. Cruise it from Youghal or Villierstown, fish it with a local permit, or watch the tide flats at low water.

River Bride – the quiet Blackwater tributary

Cork, cork

The Bride runs 64 km from the hills of north Cork to meet the Munster Blackwater at Camphire in Waterford, holding brown trout the whole way and turning tidal at Tallow Bridge. There is no waymarked riverside trail bar a short loop near Glenville – following the water means stitching together lanes, farm tracks and footpaths through Rathcormac, Castlelyons, Conna and Tallow.

Questions people ask

Which of these are closest to Cork city?
Lough Mahon fringes the southern suburbs, with flat paved greenway paths linking to Blackrock Castle and the Marina Market. The Glashaboy runs through Glanmire with its own waymarked walk. Inniscarra Lake is 15 km west on the dammed Lee. All three are short trips from the city.
Where is Ireland's highest waterfall in Cork, and can you walk to it?
The Mare's Tail spills down the flank of Hungry Hill above Adrigole on the Beara Peninsula. It sits on private land, so you view it from a lay-by on the R572 rather than up close, and it only really performs after a few days of rain.
Which of these are worth fishing?
Inniscarra Lake is the coarse-fishing water, with bream, pike and tench. The Munster Blackwater and the Bandon are the salmon and sea-trout rivers, the Awbeg is noted trout water, and Lough Allua holds pike with no permit needed. The Blackwater is fished on a local permit.
Do these cluster in one part of the county?
No. Lough Hyne, Lough Akeen on Sheep's Head, Lissagriffin on the Mizen and Lough Allua are spread across West Cork and its peninsulas, with Coomarkane and the Mare's Tail on Beara. The Blackwater and Awbeg run through north Cork, and three sit close to the city.
When is the best time to go?
Waterfalls want rain behind them, so the Mare's Tail is a wet-spell trip. Spring and autumn bring thousands of migratory waders to Lough Mahon's mudflats and the Blackwater estuary. Lough Hyne can be paddled after dark for its bioluminescence, or visited simply for the picnic tables.
